Dommaraju Gukesh is a talented up and coming Indian chess grandmaster who has been making waves over the world with his play and achievements. Gukesh, born in Chennai in 2006, became a Grandmaster at 12, one of the youngest in history.

History Gukesh learnt the game at a young age and mastered it quite well. He quickly progressed in junior chess, winning several World Youth and Asian titles at the rapid, blitz and classical chess championships. His junior success was only the start. In his early teens he quickly established himself as a favourite of chess audiences the world over with string of fine performances which displayed both maturity and tactical brilliance.
One of Gukesh’s most notable achievements came at the 44th Chess Olympiad in 2022 where he won an individual gold medal and India claimed a team bronze. He bettered it with a gold in the team and another in the individual at the 45th Olympiad in 2024. Not only did these feats boost India’s stakes in the chess world, they put Gukesh in the driver’s seat of the game.
He established himself on the elite level by winning the Candidates Tournament in 2024, to become the youngest winner in the history of the event. This brilliant achievement made him the challenger of current World Champion Ding Liren.
