Scientists warn that only two years remain of the world's carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5 °C, as emissions continue to rise at record levels. Exceeding this threshold could lead to catastrophic environmental impacts by 2030.
Scientists have issued urgent warnings: the world now has only two years of carbon budget left to limit warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. Exceeding this threshold could trigger uncontrollable climate feedbacks and catastrophic weather patterns. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 86% chance that at least one year between 2025–2029 will breach the 1.5 °C threshold and an 80% probability that the five-year temperature average for 2025–2029 surpasses it.
Simultaneously, researchers have identified a disturbing feedback loop: rapid glacial melting in Antarctica could destabilize subglacial volcanoes, triggering eruptions that release greenhouse gases and aerosols, accelerating warming further . Meanwhile, the Thwaites Glacier, dubbed the "Doomsday Glacier," is melting at a worrying rate; its collapse alone could raise sea levels by 65 cm, with even broader destabilization consequences .
The 2023–2025 global coral bleaching event has emerged as the worst on record, impacting 84% of the world's coral reefs due to persistent ocean warming — a stark signal toward broad ecosystem collapse if warming continues unchecked
